An international day is founded in 1983 by the International council of questions of monuments and notable places (The International Council on Monuments and Sites, ICOMOS). This ungovernmental international organization unites more than 7500 specialists (architects, historians, archaeologists, art critics, geographers, anthropologists, engineers and town-planners), working on a statement, introduction and observance of international conventions on preservation and increase of meaningfulness of cultural and natural heritage, all over the world.Work of ICOMOS is based on the principles stopped up in 1964 by the Venetian charter on maintenance of monuments and notable places. Members assist the improvement of maintenance of cultural and natural heritage, standards and methods for the different types of heritage : building, historical cities, landscape archaeological areas.

Today in a collaboration with most countries of the world work on determination of monuments of nature and culture, deserving named the objects of world heritage, assisting to their safety for future generations, United Nations conduct on questions of education, science and culture (UNESCO, UNESCO).

The Convention accepted in 1972 about the guard of world cultural and natural heritage is base on that some values of cultural and natural heritage present exceptional interest for the whole world and that is why must be considered part of world heritage of all humanity. The list of world heritage (World Heritage List) includes 878 objects, having a prominent universal value, including 679 objects cultural, today, 174 - natural and 25 objects of the mixed heritage in 145 countries.A holiday is marked annually on April, 18 - in the International day of monuments and prominent places, that is yet named the International day of monuments of history, culture and prominent places, International day of guard of monuments and historical places etc.
